“I take photographs because I have to - it’s like an addiction that drives me.”

Anthony Dorman

In order to succeed at anything you do, you need to fall in love with it. Perhaps, this is the best expression that could describe Anthony’s love to his camera and photography. Anthony Dorman, a professional photographer based in Newcastle upon Tyne, whose passion to take photos has opened endless opportunities for him.

Anthony comes from a background in Fine Arts, with a degree in Fine Arts Sculpture from Northumbria University. After graduating, he worked in Fine Art Publishing for a period of time. However, a holiday to Thailand four years ago had changed everything; it was the reason behind Anthony’s discovery towards his passion in photography.

Being able to shoot freely without curbing himself to any sort of limitation has brought him a different level of enjoyment while taking pictures. His interests flourished even more as he explored different styles of photography.

His professionalism, perfection and consistency in his work over the years have reinforced his credibility and reputation in the photography industry. His impressive portfolio displays the vast amount of photographs he has taken through commercial work, such as shooting events, advertising content, products and individuals.

Anthony’s passion in photography has helped him express himself through the lens of his camera.  He hopes that his pictures can show people the actual meaning behind the still image, ‘reality’.

“To show people something that sometimes they may normally walk away from. I see a lot of people ignoring homeless people, or unusual looking people because they are either frightened or intimidated. I just want to show people as they really are, and that could be somebody who is quite scary or intimidating looking or somebody who is stereotypically beautiful. I just want people to still look at someone’s face and know who that person is from the photo and whether they can sense kindness in their eyes or their strong personality. This is what makes them interesting and makes me stop and take their photo.”

Anthony is drawn in particular to portraiture and street photography. The interaction he gets with from the people he photographs is what excites him. People with great character and especially those particular individuals that stand out of the crowd intrigue him.

During his spare time, Anthony, would normally put his camera on his shoulder and walk around trying to find interesting and different things that would capture his interest. He also likes to experiment by taking pictures from different angles at different times of the day.

One of his favourite and inspiring photographers is Vivian Maier, an American amateur street photographer. Her work is predominantly street photography scenes in Chicago and New York during the 1950s and 1960s. Anthony described her as "a street photographer of breath-taking brilliance, with an eye not just for light and composition but for humour and an understanding of the human condition."

The thousands of photos he has taken over the years, and the large collection he has gathered, encouraged him to start a blog. Anthony believes that the blog is an effective tool to display all his photography and a way to keep an online archive. Although a picture is worth a thousand words, every post comes with a description, which helps the reader understand the story and meaning behind every image.

One of Anthony’s favourite posts is called ‘A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints’ and is based on a title from his favourite movie. The post features a series of photographs on a group of young boys playing basketball in some part of the city centre in Glasgow. He is fond of these particular photographs not only for how they turned out to be, but the moment captured through the photographs.

“There was something that I liked, when I captured them at that particular time, a group of friends, and I hope that they look back when they are older and say. ‘Hey, that’s us when we were fourteen and fifteen playing basketball in the street’. I wish that somebody had documented me and my friends at the same time, because it seems such a long time ago and we tend to forget things”.

As a local blogger from Newcastle, from his point of view there are not so many bloggers around in the North East, however, the majority of the blogs available are quite specialised. Anthony hopes that through the blog, his photography will make readers realise his passion in taking picture and capturing a single moment that could mirror an immense meaning behind it.
